Porto Inside GuideGuide Nº 05 · The Night Out
The Night Files · Friday on Praça de Dom João I

Where to eat before a night out in Porto? The evening starts at Capa.

Between nine and eleven on a Friday, one square in Porto changes pace. Here is why the city’s pre-night-out dinner keeps landing at the same address, and how to make the most of it.

The hour the room changes

At half past eight the room still belongs to families and to people straight from work. By ten it is something else: tables of six, eight and ten, phones passing photos around, rissóis ordered for the middle of the table, and the question every waiter hears on a Friday: what time does the kitchen close?

The answer is simple. On Fridays and Saturdays the kitchen serves until midnight, which leaves time for a proper dinner and still gets you out early. Locals tell the story with a smile: this is where you see Porto’s best-dressed crowd before the bars. We take no credit for that. We just serve the francesinha and the cold beer; the rest is the city happening.

Why the night starts here

Geography explains most of it. Capa na Baixa sits next to the Teatro Rivoli, about five minutes on foot from Rua de Cândido dos Reis and the Galerias de Paris, and a couple of steps from Rua de Passos Manuel and the Aliados. If you agree to meet in the centre before going out, you tend to land here: it is easy to find, it has room for big groups, and the bill leaves some budget for the rest of the night.

What to order before you go out

The ritual repeats from table to table:

To drink, cold beer leads, followed by a jug of white or red sangria for the table, and a gin and tonic for whoever wants to start the night at the table.

Big groups without the stress

Birthdays, bachelor parties, class dinners and Erasmus farewells: there is at least one every Friday night. For groups of eight or more it is worth reserving and, to simplify the bill, choosing one of the group menus at 25 to 40 euros per person with drinks and coffee included. The interior garden and the esplanade are the most requested spaces; say which you prefer when you book.

After dinner

From the table, the Galerias de Paris are five minutes on foot. Rua de Passos Manuel and Maus Hábitos are around the corner, and if you prefer the river, the Ribeira is about fifteen minutes on foot along Rua das Flores. Ask for the bill in good time, confirm the group, and go.
