Red sangria gets the postcards. White is where the craft shows. A short guide to judging a white sangria in Porto, and why ours is the sparkling one served by the jug at Capa na Baixa.
Full disclosure: Porto Inside Guide is published by the team behind Capa na Baixa, so treat our pick as the house opinion. Then judge for yourself with the checklist below.
Sangria is a wine-based punch you will find across the Iberian peninsula, and in Porto it is usually ordered by the jug for the table. Red is the default. White is harder to get right: with no tannin or dark fruit to hide behind, a weak white sangria tastes either like sweet lemonade or like warm wine. When it works, it is the most refreshing drink at the table.
The menu lists it as the Sangria Espumante Branca (white sparkling sangria). Its ingredients, as listed, are cinnamon, mint, Beirão liqueur, gin, champagne and lemonade. Beirão is a Portuguese herbal liqueur, and it is the detail that sets this one apart: it adds a warm, spiced note that most white sangrias lack, while the gin and the bubbles keep it dry and bright.
The price: €6 a glass or €22 a jug. The red sangria, made with cinnamon, mint, brandy, triple sec, red wine and lemonade, is €6 a glass or €20 a jug. If you are going for the jug, ask the team how many glasses it pours.
A white sparkling sangria is a table drink, so order it with food you pick at: the meat rissóis to share, then something from the charcoal grill. It also works with a francesinha for anyone who prefers it to beer, though a cold beer is the classic partner. In summer, the esplanade and the interior garden are the places to drink it.
If you are coming with a big table, white or red sangria is one of the drink options on the group menus at 30, 35 and 40 euros per person: 0.5 L per person, alongside beer, wine, water and soft drinks. Each person picks one of the listed alternatives.
